So you want to skip right past the whole agent, editor, publisher path to getting your book into bookstores.

Maybe they aren’t interested in your vision right now, or you don’t want to lose creative control. Perhaps it is part of your strategy to get them to pay attention to you. There are some great reasons to self-publish, especially if you have a niche market that you are already reaching. Keep in mind though that if you’re self-publishing you’re going to have to do everything. In order to make a successful book, you not only need to write well, but also fulfill the design, marketing and editing needs of your book.

In book world, there is a long tradition of self-publishing and many comic artists have also found themselves in this position. Sometimes it is very difficult for an unknown to garnish the attention needed to find a publisher and sometimes the project just doesn’t strike a publisher as good enough to meet the bottom line.

That’s where self-publishing comes in, but beware, it is not for the faint of pocketbook and will involve a lot of work past the initial writing.
